Tell us about yourself. Where did you grow up? How did you get to Portland?

I’m originally from Los Angeles. Born and raised there and worked in the television industry after college for 10 years which also took me to New York where I lived for almost five years before I moved to Portland. I’m married and have two sons.

Tell us about your role at Instrument.

I produce creative content and design for clients. Right now, I’m on the Nike team and we help design and create stories for all of the Nike digital platforms such as Nike.com, Nike+ App, Nike Run Club, etc. But I actually just recently accepted an opportunity at Netflix. By the time this feature comes out, I’ll probably be there in Los Angeles working on content for them which will be a tremendous opportunity.

How did you get started on this career path?

I went to film school in Los Angeles. I’ve always loved movies and stories. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do but I knew that I wasn’t going to be a lawyer or something like that, I just wanted to write and entertain. Film was the “easy” option...so I thought. After school, I got a job at ABC Television as an assistant and start working and learning the business there.

Any tips for people looking to follow your career path?

Don’t be afraid to tell people exactly what it is you want or hope to do. Even if you haven’t done it yet. You never know who will help you achieve a goal but they’ll only know what you’re seeking to do if you tell them. Many times, people are shy to talk about their dreams. Put it out there, you never know what will happen once you do.

What are some projects you have in the works currently?

I have a couple film projects that I’d like to do in the next few months. These are two short films that are simple and visual passion projects. Film is such a collaborative process, the stars have to align to make quality work. You have to be patient and make sure you’re able to do it right.

You and your wife just had a baby boy. Any parenting advice?

I kept reminding myself that millions of people have been parents before me and if they could do it so could I. You learn every day something new about being a father or parent. Don’t be hard on yourself and enjoy it. I feel like with my boys, it’s a chance for me to be a kid again. I learn from them as much as they hopefully learn from me. It’s almost like a new beginning and new version of yourself.

Anything you're doing differently the second time around?

So far, second time has been much easier. There is less panic. You know what you’re doing but a lot of the small details you forget over time because they grow up so fast and time moves so quickly. My boys are almost 4 years apart. The first few years were all a blur but slowly things are coming back like changing a diaper, etc. But I still check both boys in the middle of the night just to make sure they are breathing!

Favorite books or films?

Oh man...so many to choose from. One book that has had a big impact on me especially recently was Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman. This book just spoke to me and opened my eyes to many things and how I’d like to live. A couple movies this year also had a big impact. Moonlight inspired me to really put more energy and time into making films and telling stories the way I’d like to tell them and really seek out my own visual voice and language. That movie hit hard and grabbed me and is amazing. I could rattle off a ton of movies, Forrest Gump, Fight Club, The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons, Rocky, Karate Kid, Amelie, so many...

Hobbies?

I love to paint. Doing something with my hands that is creative and artistic I’ve realized is super important and vital. I also love to shoot hoops when I can, but my knees say otherwise now.

What did you think of the Wool&Prince gear you wore?

My wife has worked in the fashion industry for a while and I’ve been into clothing and style for since I can remember. That said, I was really impressed with the Wool&Prince pieces. First, the feel and quality is completely luxurious but not at lux prices which is amazing. The fit is the best part. I have long arms and I’m thin so it’s hard to find something that is slim and fitted but not tight. These shirts were perfect. The drape was amazing. You add that with the fabrics and you have a win-win. Then you mix in the variety of button downs, polos and t-shirts and you can literally have a nice wardrobe with a few key pieces. Another thing I noticed were the super premium details in the stitching or the cuffs. The Wool&Prince team has taken the time to obsess over the details and make something phenomenal and affordable for me.

Edwin is 6' tall, 170 lbs, and wears a size M tee/polo and a slim fit M button-down / dress shirt.

Big thanks to the folks at priestley.co for letting us shoot in their space.
